The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) is seeking energetic, service-oriented individuals to join the Food Services Department as Best Café Staff.

The Best Café is a fast-casual restaurant open daily for lunch and Wednesday-Friday evenings for dinner. With events such as Dominion Energy Jazz Café and Happy Hour on Friday evenings, the Best Café is a popular destination among visitors.

This is a non-exempt position without benefits, scheduled to work up to approximately 28 hours per week on average and up to 1,450 hours annually (May 1 – April 30). This position offers various Commonwealth of Virginia employee benefits such as free admission to special exhibitions, previews of special exhibitions, employee pricing for select museum programs and classes, as well as discounts in Amuse Restaurant, the Best Café and the VMFA shop.

Duties include:

Welcoming and providing assistance to guests.

Taking orders, preparing food and serving guests while adhering to safe food handling standards.

Using Point-of-Sale system/cash register, collecting payment from guests and providing correct change.

Maintaining cleanliness in the dining room and back of house.

Stocking and managing inventory throughout the shift.

Displaying knowledge of cafe menu, products, and promotions.

Displaying knowledge about VMFA exhibitions and programs.

Demonstrating teamwork by proactively helping others when they need it.

Minimum Qualifications

Ability to provide excellent customer service and remain calm in high volume situations.

Ability to work a flexible schedule including days, holidays, evenings and weekends.

Ability to maintain consistent attendance & punctuality as well as professional appearance and grooming standards.

Ability to operate a point-of-sale system including both cash and credit card transactions.

Ability to communicate clearly and respectfully with both guests and staff members.

Ability to read, write and comprehend instructions.

Ability to lift or move up to 50 pounds.

Ability to use fine and gross motor skills; finger and hand dexterity; reach with hands and arms; climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk and hear.

Ability to stand or walk for up to 8 hours.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous food service experience in a fast-paced environment.

ServSafe Certification.

Knowledge of Alcohol Beverage Control policies and guidelines.

Experience with point of sales system and responsible cash handling.

Special Requirements

Selected candidates must pass a criminal history background check.
