Position Title – Astronomy Educator/Dome Operator

The Science Museum of Virginia seeks a dynamic Astronomy Educator to lead energetic live presentations in The Dome for general public, school group, and special event audiences. In addition to daily presentations, this position will assist with the planning and preparation of new material to support upcoming planetarium shows and current astronomical events. The position requires operation of the theater display and automation software Digistar 6, as well as occasional maintenance to PC, video projector, and other related equipment.
Must be able to work evenings, weekends and holidays.
Please note that this is a part-time position and will be scheduled for a maximum of 29 hours a week on average with an absolute maximum of 1500 hours in a 12 month period. No state benefits are provided.
Desirable candidates should be energetic, outgoing, enthusiastic and enjoy “being on stage”; exhibit excellent communication skills; the enthusiasm for teaching people of all backgrounds; truly enjoy engaging with and entertaining children and families. They should exhibit knowledge and demonstrated ability to plan and implement informal science educational programs and events; strong working knowledge of astronomy is essential, including the ability to interpret astronomical data from almanacs, star charts, books and internet resources; familiarity with current astronomical events; the ability to effectively interact with the general public, community groups, outside vendors and staff members; strong oral and written communication skills; excellent interpersonal skills; demonstrated ability to schedule, manage and supervise volunteers; previous experience with basic PC and audio/visual equipment troubleshooting and maintenance. The successful candidate will also demonstrate effective problem solving skills, patience and flexibility.
Availability to work weekends is required.
BS /BA degree, or in process, from an accredited college or university with coursework in astronomy or astronomy education; previous experience delivering educational programs in informal and/or formal settings. Museum experience and ASL or Spanish language competencies a plus.
