The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) is seeking a skilled professional to join the Imaging Resources Department as an Assistant Photographer.

This faculty, exempt position offers Commonwealth of Virginia employee benefits such as 12 paid holidays, health benefits and more.

The Assistant Photographer, as part of a grant funded 18-month project to document and digitize the VMFA photography collection, will:

Provide superior quality digital images of assigned art objects

Maintain, and profile, image capture hardware and software; related computer hardware; and printing hardware

Actively implement best practices for digital workflow, storage, retrieval, and access, following VMFA strategic plan to make the collection widely available

Provides digital retouching to scanned analog images and original digital capture files when necessary

NOTE: This position is grant funded for 18 months and continued employment is subject to continuation of funds.

Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of all aspects of traditional photography with particular emphasis on professional digital imaging equipment and processes

Knowledge of various lighting techniques and styles for documenting 2D fine art objects

Knowledge of international fine art reproduction digitization standards and an ability to implement those standards

Extensive computer skills necessary related to digital imaging and digital imaging software including Photoshop and multiple types of camera control software

Ability to work across platforms, i.e. Windows and Macintosh operating systems

Knowledge of various imaging software suites including Adobe, Phase One, and Hasselblad products

Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver deadline driven work

Ability and knowledge of careful practices in working with the collection

Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor of Fine Arts degree or higher in photography or related communications arts and design degree

Demonstrated experience with 2D fine art reproduction photography

Contributions to fine arts publications

Experience with advanced digital imaging including various formats of digital capture, scanning, and printing

Extensive experience in Photoshop editing

Special Requirements
Selected candidates must pass a criminal history background check.

All staff (state and foundation), volunteers, and contractors at VMFA must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
COVID-19 Testing (September 24 – October 31, 2021)
Weekly testing for COVID-19 required for all staff that are not fully vaccinated as mandated by Executive Directive 18.
Effective November 1, all VMFA staff must be fully vaccinated, and weekly testing will no longer be conducted (except for cases of approved medical and religious accommodation).
