Assistant Curator, Virginia Holocaust Museum, Richmond, VA 


The Collections Department of the Virginia Holocaust Museum is a rapidly expanding department within a local public history museum. The department contains thousands of rare and important objects as well as research material on the Holocaust and modern genocide. The Assistant Curator is an entry-level position responsible for a variety of administrative, technical, and preservation duties throughout the Museum.


Essential job functions:


  • Creates accurate and consistent accession and catalog records for a wide variety of objects
  • Processes incoming materials for the Virginia Holocaust Museum Archives
  • Maintains accurate and up-to-date records of donors
  • Oversees proper storage and conservation of a wide range of materials based on archival best practices
  • Assists with the preservation and upkeep of the Museum's permanent exhibits
  • Administers the scheduling and maintenance of the VHM's traveling exhibits
  • Assists with the development and construction of new permanent & traveling exhibits
  • Assists in providing access to the VHM research collections
  • Works with outside institutions in coordinating disaster preparedness plans




  • Minimum BA/BS in history, museum studies, or related field
  • 1 to 2 years of experience in archives doing appraisal, description, and preservation work with a variety of material types
  • Knowledge of best practices in the handling and care of archival material
  • Experience using PastPerfect or similar collection management software
  • Working knowledge of the Holocaust and World War II
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Competency with computers and digital media


Starting salary: $35,500
