Textiles comprise a large part of many museum collections, although caring for them can be daunting. A visit to both the Fredericksburg Area Museum and the James Monroe Museum and Memorial Library will offer attendees the opportunity to hear first-hand from curators and conservators about not only the care of textiles but best practices of exhibiting and storage. Using illustrations of the types of clothing and textiles generally found in collections, the presenters will discuss the agents of deterioration that are harmful to fabrics in storage and on exhibit, and techniques to help stabilize the objects. Learn what archival materials and three dimensional supports to use with textiles and the basics of preparing them for storage and exhibit.
We will meet at the Fredericksburg Area Museum for the first part of the workshop and then walk to the nearby James Monroe Museum and Memorial Library for the afternoon portion. Walking shoes recommended.
