Where the Wild Things Are: Maurice Sendak in His Own Words and Pictures

Join the "wild rumpus" as Maurice Sendak’s life and work are celebrated in an interactive exhibition. Hands-on interaction is encouraged for Museum visitors of all ages as they act out the narratives of Sendak’s well-known children’s classics. Younger visitors can don a costume and become a “wild thing,” sail in Max’s boat, or slide down into a bowl of chicken soup. Literacy and creativity are the rule in this exciting exhibition. Maurice Sendak’s rich personal history is explored through his handwritten notes, manuscripts, and illustrations as well as through a video interview with Sendak.

Elizabeth Huey's large-scale paintings are inspired by her research into American asylums of the 19th century and fueled by her personal experiences. Medical practitioners and patients wander the grandiose grounds of her paintings seeking some form of a cure.

Fredericksburg Area Battlefields: Old Times They Are Not Forgotten will kick off the Fredericksburg Area Museum’s celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War. Post war images of local battlefields, and photos of erected monuments are some of the things included in the exhibit. Many of the objects featured in this exhibit have never publicly been displayed before creating the rare opportunity to see them for the first time.

Participate in children’s militia drills, help with the Citie’s forge and carpentry shop, learn colonial-era games and do household jobs. Meet and trade items with your Powhatan Indian neighbors. Sir Thomas Dale brought tradesmen, soldiers, and laborers to Virginia in 1611. This event demonstrates the English working class with tradesmen such as carpenters, tailors, blacksmiths, and shipwrights recreating the work of 1611-1622 Virginia. Watch demonstrators make a variety of colonial crafts and play colonial games. Additionally, soldiers and women artisans will demonstrate their trades as well. Visitors may be asked to become apprentices! Daily Admission Fee.

Experience a day in the life of the soldiers of Sir Thomas Dale’s militia. Visit with the soldiers in the 1611 Citie of Henricus, participate in drills with the Henricus Militia and see demonstrations of tactics, armor and weaponry used by the 17th century soldiers who built and protected Henricus. Through activities and arts and crafts, campers will explore both the life and importance of Pocahontas and the culture of the Powhatan people. Using our re-created Powhatan village of Arrohatec and the Citie of Henricus, we will compare and contrast their culture with that of the English who settled here 400 years ago.
