| The Mariners’ Museum in Newport News seeks a part-time science educator to work on the conception, research, development and implementation of science- and maritime-based programs for elementary and secondary school students and adult groups. The Educator will participate in the delivery of educational programs both on and off site and via interactive videoconferencing. The successful candidate may also assist in the exhibit development process with special emphasis on the interpretive programming that will complement the exhibit. The successful candidate should have a bachelor’s degree in science, education or a related field. Two years experience as a teacher in the field of chemistry or earth science is preferred. | Responsibilities:
The Interpretive Assistant will:
•Assist in the daily operations and interpretation of the Park’s Military Encampment or Tudor Hall Plantation. This work will be performed in period clothing, outdoors in all types of weather conditions.
•Conduct scheduled demonstrations and guided tours following specific program outlines to large and varied audiences.
•Assist with the implementation of living history related programs and activities.
•Conduct programming in support of the Education and Visitor Services Department for large groups of students and adults.
•Become certified in a variety of programs by passing written exams, attending classes and demonstrating competence in public speaking, program delivery, and visitor management techniques.
•Assist in the maintenance of areas used by the department staff.
•Assist other departments and participate in special events as needed.
•Perform other duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications:
•A High School diploma or equivalent.
•Interest in American social and Civil War history.
•Knowledge of the principles of interpretation.
•Effective verbal communication skills.
•Ability to perform tasks that require moderate physical exertion as required (lifting, climbing, bending, pulling, standing for long periods).
•Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays. |

Other duties include planning and implementing homeschool days and family fun days, creating lessons plans and supplemental materials for teachers and students and aiding the Educational Programs Coordinator with the annual Teachers Institute as well as other special events throughout the year such as Girl Scout Badge Days and Court End Christmas. | Responsibilities
Responsible for the public operation of the Maymont Mansion, managing daily tours, group tours, school programs, focus tours, and other special interpretation. Supervises, trains, evaluates, and schedules tour guides; coordinates Maymont Mansion volunteer participation and ongoing tour guide communications and continuing education. Participates in planning and implementing Maymont’s historical interpretation. Manages group tours, plans and implements school programs, coordinates house museum reservations, and produces visitation and income reports. Conducts tours and programs as needed.
Qualifications
Bachelor of Arts in History, Art History, or related discipline required. A minimum of two years experience coordinating and presenting museum or historic site tours and programs required. Excellent oral communications, writing skills, interpersonal skills, and organizational ability required. Teaching experience and knowledge of SOLs preferred. Must enjoy interacting with public audiences of all ages and volunteers. A fair degree of physical stamina required. Occasional weekend days and evenings required for tours, programs and events required. Computer proficiency required.
