"Great Houses of the South" Author Talk and Book Signing

Dr. Laurie Ossman will discuss and sign Great Houses of the South (Rizzoli, 2010) at the Garden Hall at Maymont(1700 Hampton Street, Richmond, VA 23220). The book is a stunning compilation of newly photographed mansions that span three centuries, including Richmond’s own Maymont Mansion and the Wickham House at the Valentine Richmond History Center.

Star Party/Laser Light Shows

Free sky observing begins at sunset at the museum. The planetarium program "Astronaut" is at 7:30 p.m. Then, our laser light concerts in the planetarium: Laser Spirit (family) at 8:30, Hypnotica (hard rock) at 10, and Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" at 11:30. Ray Day at the Cafe

Want to taste some Chesapeake ray? The VLM's Wild Side Cafe will offer free samples (while supplies last) of this "veal of the sea," courtesy of the Virginia Marine Products Board. The state is trying to create this market because of concerns ray are harming the bay's shellfish and destroying sea grass beds. 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

Animal Secrets

Where does a chipmunk sleep? What does an eagle feed its young? How do mother bats find their babies in a cave? In Animal Secrets, families will learn the answers to these questions and more as they explore the hidden habitats and secret lives of forest animals. Using imaginative role-play and hands-on activities, children will discover nature from an animal’s point of view in naturalistic environments, including a stream, woodland, meadow, cave and naturalists tent.
